The PATIO Burger & Ice Cream Co. Okanagan Falls Junior Triathlon is a fun, non-competitive sporting event for children aged 3 through 13. We are an official Kids of Steel Event, and are fully sanctioned through TriBC. Our motto is that "It's not about the time you get, it's about the time you have". If you are looking for a hard-core race, this may not be the event for you!
We have all the bells and whistles that adult races do, without the stress or the registration fees. When the kids check in at registration (on Friday June 14th, 2019 from 3 pm until 7 pm) they will receive a race packet complete with personalized race bib, numbered swim cap, an Athlete T-Shirt, and a few goodies from sponsors (TBD). The kids will be checked in, body marked, and sent over to the Transition Area to arrange their bikes and equipment (we will have a professional security guard to keep the bikes safe over night).
On race day (June 15th, 2019 from 8:00 am until 9:30 am) our athletes will have access to two on-course Aid Stations, and will have the pleasure of hearing the infamous Steve King announce their names as they cross over the finish line. Upon crossing the finish line all children will receive a finisher's medal, fresh cookies, and icy cold chocolate milk.
Our triathlon begins with a "swim" at Kenyon Beach (Skaha Lake), followed by a bike ride on park paths and closed roads (in and around Kenyon Park and Christie Memorial Park), and finishes with a run through a giant inflatable finish line. Please know that your children's safety is our utmost concern - our children are out there too!! The race is strongly supported by volunteers, the RCMP, St. John's Ambulance Brigade, in-water Life Guards, our local physician, and TriBC Officials.
To keep things fun and easy, we do things a little differently. We have volunteer "Pace Bunnies" (with giant ears) so that the little ones have someone to follow while biking and running. The bike and run courses are very close to each other, so we have devised a very clever colour-coded arrow system to keep the bigger athletes going in the right direction: Blue= Bike and Red = Run. Each race is also colour-coded, so even if your little one can't read letters or numbers, he or she will do fine.
We understand that not all children are comfortable in all three sports, and that some may find the distances too long. The Kids of Steel Program was created to ensure all children have a successful day, and encourages participation at every level. If your child has special needs, would prefer to do two sports, fewer laps, or even have mom or dad tag along, accommodations can easily be made (with prior notice).
Please have a look through our site (made by a volunteer, so be kind!), and contact us if you have any questions. Our event fills up quickly, so
we encourage you to register early.
We hope to see you in the sand on Race Day!
** If you face financial barriers, we can help provide equipment for your child. Please let us know in the designated area on the registration form, and your needs will be met discreetly.
